Using keywords that don't match a site
Posted by: Brem - 10-24-2014, 01:09 PM - Forum: Keywords - No Replies

I have never used this method, but I know someone who did and it didn't seem to help them any. But I'm asking you's anyways. So, does using keywords meant for another niche app on your app, does it actually help increase traffic in anyway? I know when it comes to doing this for websites it doesn't work anymore, but I figure it may work for the app marketplace to some extent. Any knowledge on this? Or should I just not even bother with trying it?

Do you find your own keywords?
Posted by: Brem - 10-24-2014, 01:06 PM - Forum: Keywords - Replies (7)

When it comes to picking out the proper keywords for your apps, do you just go with what you think is right or do you actually use tools out there to find top keywords? I've used both methods and I believe it works both ways, but tools will often find harder to think of keywords.

How to find the top keywords
Posted by: ASOGod - 10-24-2014, 03:53 AM - Forum: Keywords - Replies (7)

What to know what people are searching on iTunes in order to target those keywords?

Easy, open the App Store app, go to search, type "A" and wait, them type "B" or "Aa" and so on. Got it?

Next to know how easy it would be to rank for the keyword you've found, go to sensortower or appannie and check the number of results (your competitors)

Now THANK me Wink

Blackhat ASO in China is called Shuabang
Posted by: ASOGod - 10-20-2014, 04:36 AM - Forum: Forced Conversion - No Replies

Shuabang is an industry in China. Entire companies specialized in BHASO.

Methods for iOS:

Shuabang practitioners  have created millions of phantom Apple iTunes accounts — in China you don’t need a credit card number to start an account.

Almost as soon as Apple adjusts its algorithm, Shuabang experts offer new downloads, ratings or whatever measurements required to fudge the numbers. Shuabang is a sport, and it isn’t a cheap one. Shuabang fees start at $1,500 to get into a top 100 list — a top 10 listing costs as much as $10,000 per day.

When you hire a service, the company hire and subcontract 150 to 200 agents who log on using the Shuabang company’s millions of iTunes accounts to download and review the apps as often as is needed to fulfill the order. If they fail to deliver — be it downloads, the desired ranking or the period over which the ranking is maintained — the customer’s money is refunded. No questions asked.

Shuabang methods include: boosting ratings all at once within a couple of hours, doing it on a Friday to maximize exposure during the weeks or spreading it out over a month, yanking ratings up whenever they slip.

Methods for Android:

- Widgets created to automatically download apps in order to get higher rankings in Android app stores. Also, it’s no secret that many Chinese Internet companies have been secretly installing applications, or misleading users to uninstall competing ones on users’ PCs or, more recently, mobile devices without their knowledge.

- Creating thousands of "Shanzhai" apps, knockoffs. No matter how many users those knockoffs can get, they carry ads or have in-app paid offerings. To attract users, lots of knockoffs use pictures of beauties as app icons or take various approaches to tricking users into downloading those apps.

- Secretly side loading Android apps into users’ devices that have rats. One compromised Android device must be very busy at night downloading all kinds of apps, opening them and then uninstall them before their masters wake up in the morning. Shady ops go so far as to make purchases with users’ online banking accounts...

Some Android security services in China, like Qihoo are app distributors themselves... some underground channels, given they’ve been controlling many users’ devices, are now selling user behavior analysis reports!!!

  Keywords For App Store Optimization

The best resource, hands down, for keyword optimization is SensorTower's blog and videos:

  Link stealing
Posted by: Bucks - 10-20-2014, 03:45 AM - Forum: Forced Conversion - No Replies

I've found this article on BHASO that reads

Quote:The searching system works in simple ways. It does not perceive websites as we do. Keywords and numbers matter to those systems. So, people who try to take advantage of such perception load the descriptions with optimized keywords that do not make sense in context.

Black hat users fill their metadata with numerous keywords that do not match with their content at all. Just to attract a lot of crawlers with no real potential of becoming a lead, these guys choose this way to rank at the top and accept quantity over quality.

Another example of this is link stealing. To deceive searching systems, they bait a solid link that does not relate to the subject in any way whatsoever, which may result in fooling the searching system, thus ranking the application at the top and indirectly increasing traffic.

Purchasing visits, downloads etc. is also an alternative way of increasing inorganic and temporary traffic. However it is not truly accepted as a black hat method; it definitely isn’t a white hat method as well. This produces the new terminology of gray hat methods. For further information, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_hat

Reviews could be a deceptive way to also increase ranking. Today, people do not trust anything more than other people and their reviews because people know that these people write, not because they seek financial profit, but only because they wanted to contribute. Black hat methodology undermines the review system, and, by using simple programming, they generate reviews as if a real human being wrote them by using slang words and street talk.

There are numerous other ways, and there will be new ways since it is a brand new field. But the fundamentals will give us an idea about black hat ASO.

The part I didn't get is "link stealing". Can any expert explain?
